Hi,
I'm very new to digital movies...just purchased my first digital movie camera...and I'm looking for advice on a decent inexpensive editing program. Something basic, since as I said I'm new at this, and ideally, something with a free trial download so I can play with it first to see if I can work with it.
The camera records everything as an .asf file but I assume a good software package would allow me to convert it to another format as well.
All suggestions greatfully appreciated.
Zane

Re: software
Sat, April 9, 2005 - 10:45 AMWhat kind of camera? Unless it's disc based I doubt wether it records video as an asf file (or any other file format for that matter.) You may be importing it as an asf file? Just use whatever came free on your windows machine. That should be good for basic cuts and dissolves. I have a friend who uses the mac standard video editing software for most of his work (iMovie or something like that?) He's cut some really neat stuff just with his mac, no extra software at all.
What is inexpensive? -

Re: software
Sat, April 9, 2005 - 5:06 PMThe camera is a cheap one...Mustek DV4000. The video files download as .asf files to my computer, and I'm amazed at how good the quality is for such an insexpensive 4 megapixel device. So far, have recorded a 5 minute movie on the memory card without a problem.
I was hoping for a software less than $60...to give you an idea of what I mean by inexpensive. I found one for $15, tried the trial version, not really crazy about it. It only saves as mpeg or avi. It won't let me edit the asf and save as asf again, or any other format.
All suggestions greatly appreciated. -

Re: software
Sat, April 16, 2005 - 5:32 PMWhy does it have to be an asf file??
Camera technology has gotten pretty out of hand (that is, off the hook.) Sorry I don't have any other suggestions.

Sat, April 16, 2005 - 7:47 PMthis camera only saves it as an asf file, then I have to convert it to something else if I want to. -

Re: software
Sat, April 16, 2005 - 10:45 PMI looked online - the manual for this camera is at: mustekmu.brinkster.net/Downlo...ls.html
in pdf format.
ASF is windows media format. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's the native Window Media Format and can be edited (exported?) with Windows Movie Maker.
hope this helps some, jamie -

Re: software
Sat, April 16, 2005 - 11:16 PMIf memory serves, one can import ASF files into movie maker, but can only save files as wmv files ... Right now I have a memory problem or something with my computer so very few things will open and run before they "stop responding", otherwise I'd check.

Re: software
Sun, April 17, 2005 - 2:30 PMSigh. One of these days, I'll upgrade to XP.
I'm one of the last holdouts because my Scanner, and some of my software, will no longer be usable when I leave Win98. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: software
Sun, April 17, 2005 - 7:40 PMI held out with 98 for a long time for the same reasons. I have since gotten a new scanner (a Canon 3000ex that has its good and bad points ... but I couldn't complain about the price) and the other software is stuff I don't miss. I can't promise you'll like Xp over 98, but I can promise you there are advantages (like not having to reboot so much). -

Re: software
Sun, April 17, 2005 - 7:52 PMI know. I have had XP on workplace computers. Just going down kicking and screaming.
I'll remember the Movie program, when I eventually do make the transition....unless I find something better first.
Thanks.

Sun, April 17, 2005 - 3:50 AMi may have missed it in my haste but are you using a mac or a pc?
Final cut pro is the greatest mac program for video.
And as this is cinema minema i dont feel bad advising that the program can be downloaded via a peer to peer network for ummm... free.

Wed, April 20, 2005 - 1:25 PMShannon, although I really appreciate your participation here, I cannot imagine why you would suppose that it would be OK here in Cinema Minima Tribe to advise people to bootleg commercial software in this forum; please don't!
Why not support the Open Source movement instead -- advise people of Open Source alternatives to expensive commercial packages!

Re: software
Wed, April 20, 2005 - 7:38 PMUnderstandable, it just seems mildy hipocritical, in one vein we talk of guerilla filming however when it comes to getting overly expensive software for non production needs that seems taboo. The thread was not one of hi i want to produce my own movies it was one of i want to play around, get a feel. Why pay 400 dollars for that? Mayhaps limit yourself with inferior programing, yet that doesnt seem wise. Open source is lovely, and i support it one hundred percent, but the common user isn't compiling there own code or tweaking source to get the perfect working model.
I'm sorry if i feel little regret recomending a method to get the little fish into a bigger pond...
Also do you have a reccomendation for open source video software?
However I do understand that you are the moderator and as such i will no longer make reference to any form of illicit activity in your forum.
No desire to offend...

Re: software
Thu, April 21, 2005 - 5:26 PMShannon, I'm with you on this one. I am dead set against production companies and payed professionals pirating software etc to make money. However Zane doesn't sound like he falls into that category.
At any rate, dude, you can download a free version of Avid. Functionally it's pretty light but it doesn't sound like Zane needs a lot of bells and whistles. Interestingly enough, Avid provides this download free though I have yet to talk with anyone who's been able to install and use it sucessfully. The idea is that people use their free product, become familiar with it's functionality and when it comes time to pony up for the full on, bad ass mojo version they buy Avid.
Finally, I'd be using cinelerra and kino to cut video on a linux box if I had even just enough time in the day to know wether I was supposed to shit or go blind. As it is I'm busy and need something that works right out of the box. Open source is great but Zane is hanging onto Win98 for the love of Mary!

Re: software
Fri, April 22, 2005 - 9:46 AMSince you're a PC user I'd recommend checking out Premiere Elements by Adobe. It's about $100 but well worth the price as it is a combo video editor and DVD builder. It's also very easy to use and there are books available for it.
