The City of Gloom is a place where the sun doesn’t exist, the rain never stops, and the people are so complacent that they refuse to do anything to change their situations. Max is a man who has never been content in his world. One day he can no longer hide his discontentment and he begins having problems with his wife, Glumda. When Glumda goes to bed in the evening, Max goes for a walk. While walking, Max meets an odd captain who has seen the sun and gives Max a postcard as proof. Max then makes the decision go with the captain, leaving the City of Gloom. Before Glumda leaves in the morning Max makes one final plea to her in the form of a kiss. She is discussed by her husband’s new and very odd behavior and leaves the house without an argument. With his things packed in a suitcase, before leaving the house, Max drops a letter and the postcard on the table for his wife to find. He leaves with the Captain and though he never returns to the City again, he sends his wife postcards as a reminder that the sun exists in world, if she would only choose to search for it.
