we want your (original) short films for Art & Music Festival

RDiMT in association with Lightning in a Bottle Art & Music Festival are now accepting original short-form film & video submissions to showcase at our late night projection area this year.

We are putting a call out for engaging, funny, surreal, thought-provoking, avant-garde, ridiculous, sublime material but most importantly works generated by *you*. Entries should be no longer than 5 minutes, but anything that captures the imagination will be considered for screening, so don't put away that brilliant 11 minute documentary you made on the man-eating chipmunks of the African Sierra. We want to see it all.

please see the official announcement here:

http://tribes.tribe.net/renegadedriveinmovietheater/thread/d2a72bfe-b2af-488f-9419-d187eeb636fd

************

for the uninitiated:

Lightning in a Bottle is an interactive art & music festival, currently in its 3rd year at its current location in Santa Barbara, CA. Conceived by The Do Lab, an LA- based event production company that has created interactive environments within larger art & music festivals such as Coachella, Summer Sonic (Japan), & Electric Picnic (Ireland), LIB is an eclectic blend of music, art, performance, workshops and green energy that will take place over 4 days this year at the Live Oaks Campgrounds on May 23 - 26th. Powered almost entirely through solar energy & biodiesel, their mission is to create an event where participants can have amazing and fulfilling experiences whilst remaining fully conscious of the natural environment and minimizing their effect upon it.

http://lightninginabottle.org/2008/

Renegade Drive-In Movie Theatre (RDiMT) is a collective of outdoor-cinemaphiles that hold spontaneous movie screenings in random & covert locations, projecting a chosen film onto raw surfaces in unconventional locations found within the varied urban landscape of Los Angeles. Date & rendezvous point are usually announced 24-72 hours in advance and participants are encouraged to maintain a low profile when arriving at clandestine locations. Chosen films have been projected onto sides of trains, highway underpasses, deserted downtown alleys, abandoned buildings, etc. No (dark) surface goes unconsidered. Due to the barren nature of some of our chosen locations, the audiences must often bring their own seating, and of course whatever refreshments they wish to imbibe or share with others. We have yet to encounter any trouble from John Law, but the possibility is always there and well, adds to the whole experience.

I just completed an underground feature (super-8 film and dv) that explores the visions of French Surrealist actor/playwright, Antonin Artaud. Most of the plot unfolds through the internal landscape of the main character's dreams, memories and visitations from, what he believes might be, the ghost of Artaud himself.

check out the trailer:
the movie site:

It screens in SF at ATA, March 14th and in Seattle and Portland in June

Hey guys, here is my first attempt at a 'special effects" movie. It's a tribute to all of the over-the-top blockbuster movies with crazy effects. I didn't have access to a green screen studio, so I just shot everything in my apartment and had to rotoscope (trace) all the characters frame by frame to get them all in the same shot. Take a look and let me know what you think:
(see for informations et memorabilia refer to www.cinemasolubile.net)

NEXT EVENTS

** 24-25 August : Castello di Pissignano, Campello sul Clitunno (province of Spoleto, ITALY)

Campello Sul Clitunno is a small, ancient town, 10 km out of Spoleto and 53Km from Perugia, in central Italy. The Castle that since 1100 dominates the valley has a rare pentagonal tower. The zone is knowk for Olive Oil, food, arts and craftsmanship but holds a good amount of subterranean energies ready to explode.
The event is going to be organized in collaboration with OFFUCINA (www.offucina.com) and the Campello Administration.

** 13-14 September: Solubile@WORM Rotterdam

WORM is a cultural center and media rich event organizer in Rotterdam. I saw a great place with a very good energy when i visited. A cinema, a stage for concerts, a bar, a media shop plus places for workshops, for 16mm film and sound design… All designed to be sustainable/reusable and powered with free software…
** 27-28 October: Roma Solubile

With an invitation by Kollatino Underground (http://www.kollatinounderground.org).
KU is the place to be if you want to meet the roman alternative-experimental theater scene.
The CS will be embedded into the activities that Kollatino is organizing for the “Festa del Cinema” (http://www.romacinemafest.org
), the big CINEMA festival of Rome at it’s second edition. Apparently to emend itself for being too mainstream in the lounch edition, Roma film fest wants to go “solubile”. Occasion to show new cinema to the big old guy's fans in town.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
*** makers are invited to participate by the cinema solubile himself. If you like to be part get to us and impress us with your personality... we especially welcome delators: say to us who, according to your judgement we should invite to participate and why!
*** to see you must show up in the venue, there is no way you can enjoy a solubile without being to the show in person...
*** we also (usually) welcome any kind of actor performer musician ready to play with us or be part of the show in "immediatist" ways or offering his body/soul/mind/spirit to makers

FOR MORE INFORMATIONS
write to freddbomba@gmail.com or refer to our website!

Yes, it’s true; there’s comedic pre-quel to Citizen Kane, since; “behind every great man there is an evil sled.”

Thunderbird Theatre Company of San Francisco is presenting:
"Aaah! Rosebud"
Written by Peter Finch of KFOG radio (SF).

Known for a cult-like following for their off-beat comedies such as the pirate spoof; "Lusty Booty", and the last year's "Release the Kraken" (a mash-up of “Clash of the Titans meets “Clerks”), the Thunderbird brings yet another original comedy to stage.

San Francisco performances are every Thursday through Monday nights
August 23rd until September 8th.
7:30pm doors, 8:00pm curtain
Performed at: New Langton Arts
1246 Folsom Street (between 8th & 9th, South of Market)
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: 2007 Anti-Corporate Film Festival

The 2007 CounterCorp Anti-Corporate Film Festival is seeking submissions for this year's festival, which is scheduled to take place from October 19-21 in San Francisco.

The CounterCorp Festival seeks a variety of U.S. and foreign-made movies, feature-length and shorter works, and narrative (fictional) and documentary films (including animation) in both film and digital formats.

The only requirements are that they have some element or theme about how corporations affect our lives, and that non-English films have English subtitles.

To submit a film for consideration, please download and fill out the 2007 submission form (www.countercorp.org/countercorp-festival.htm ) -- and mail it in with your film by this year's deadline: July 2.

CounterCorp also welcomes suggestions for films that we should show at the Festival. Please e-mail suggestions to submissions@countercorp.org (or reply to this posting), and include as much as possible of the following information:
* The name of the film
* Approximate running time
* A brief description
* The director's name
* Year it was released
* Country of origin (and original language)
* Name of production and/or distribution company
* Why you think it fits in the CounterCorp Festival

If we end up screening a film that you suggest, we will give you two free tickets to *any* film at this year's festival. (In the event that two or more people suggest the same film, the first suggestion we receive will win the tickets -- so e-mailing your suggestion is better than replying on Tribe.)

For more information about CounterCorp or the 2007 Anti-Corporate Film Festival, visit our website at www.countercorp.org.

Short video and image contest - Zannel Fest

Cinema Minema Tribe folks may be interested in Zannel Fest, an on-line contest for short form video and still images and art. We're looking for the kind of stuff we'll think is so amazing we'll want to pass on to our friends, family, office-mates, and nearby impressionable infants. And then we'll award selected entries with things like cash, shirts, syrup, and other crazy stuffs.

And luckily this festival is free to submit to. No more pesky registration fees, all you have to do is have access to the Internet and be able to press an upload button. But perhaps the best part of registering for Zannel Fest, in addition to prizes, is that you’ll also be one of the very first users in a new content sharing network that encompasses mobile phones, the Internet, and possibly a device that hasn't been invented yet, like the PK-109 Video Helmet.

Participants are invited to submit original works in two categories - pictures or videos. Just make it fun, cool, sweet, or other superlative adjective.

Please visit www.zannelfest.com for details on the festival, submission requirements and to upload your work.

Premier of Stoner's Run @ the Parkway Theater

Attention everyone. I am an Oakland filmmaker and I want to announce the premier of my first feature length film, "Stoner's Run" at the historic Parkway Theater. Please mark you calendars and support you local filmmakers.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14th 9:15pm
Parkway Theater
1834 Park Blvd.
Oakland, CA 94606
Admission: $3

Come to the screening and meet the cast and crew of this no-budget indie film. And if you had the fortune or misfortune to work on this film, come see the fruits of our labor. Stoner's Run is what indie filmmaking is all about. No money, just vision, heart and commitment.

"Stoner's Run" is about a modern day stoner who has it all. But while partying with his friends one weekend, it all comes crashing down. While trying to score some weed, Bradley and his friends set off for some good times, adventure, and of course, weed. Little do they know that they have caught the attention of narcoticsofficers who are hungry for a bust. This little adventure will turn into a journey of epic insignificance and we learn that the good times aren’t always so good.

Cinema Solubile

Hallo folks!
Just to introduce myself, I want to pose to your attention this game called "Cinema Solubile"... I hope to find some partners for next editions and I think this group is full of people that really should like the idea...

THE GAME:::
the time of the game is 23 hrs. 11 artists that work with image and film are invited to make a no budget film in this time lapse, about an unpredictable subject. After presenting their creation to the audience they destroy the master.

some more rules are into the website were you can get a glimpse also from the fragments of the other editions. No films, because they have all been destroyed, but nice memories for those who were there. Maybe someone cheated and posted a bootleg on youtube... I have no idea ;)

hope to receive your feedback about it. I am still looking for people wishing to join in the 11 group for the following editions, so far in Groningen and in Rome, probably more to come...

best regards

The City of Gloom is a place where the sun doesn’t exist, the rain never stops, and the people are so complacent that they refuse to do anything to change their situations. Max is a man who has never been content in his world. One day he can no longer hide his discontentment and he begins having problems with his wife, Glumda. When Glumda goes to bed in the evening, Max goes for a walk. While walking, Max meets an odd captain who has seen the sun and gives Max a postcard as proof. Max then makes the decision go with the captain, leaving the City of Gloom. Before Glumda leaves in the morning Max makes one final plea to her in the form of a kiss. She is discussed by her husband’s new and very odd behavior and leaves the house without an argument. With his things packed in a suitcase, before leaving the house, Max drops a letter and the postcard on the table for his wife to find. He leaves with the Captain and though he never returns to the City again, he sends his wife postcards as a reminder that the sun exists in world, if she would only choose to search for it.

Collaborators wanted for 2 short films

I am (primarily) a writer based in just outside of LA. I have two short scripts that I would like to shoot, but I don't have the resources to do it (i.e. camera, lighting, crew, etc.). I'm looking to form a crew consisting of a director, a producer, an editor, and so on who would like to collaborate with others on these two films.

This is a good opportunity for those who have the resources and skills, but not the script, to work on a project with other independent filmmakers. Once enough people are committed to working on these two films, we can arrange meetings and plan scheduling, budget, locations, script revisions, basically, all of the pre-production necessities.

Please email me with the position you are seeking and your availability, along with your email address or postal address so I can send you a copy of the scripts.

RHAPSODY: Trailer

RHAPSODY!
This film has surpassed my expectations. An example of perseverance in the face of adversity, not the film but the journey it took to make this short. Where others were willing to walk away, I wasn't. I saw the potential and needed to bring it to fruition. With the undeniable expertise of Alex Studer and the added sound by Regan and of course the very talented, Marie Roux... Rhapsody will not only be completed, but the film is festival worthy. See the trailer, click on the link below.

February west coast tour of my film about the poet Rilke

THE GREATER CIRCULATION" (2005; 93 min., USA) a cinematic treatment of poet Rainer Maria Rilke's epic lament "Requiem For a Friend" (as translated by Stephen Mitchell).

I'm an indie filmmaker into dreams. This is my sixth feature fiction that I have directed and written the screenplay for. I am also featured as the voiceover of the poet Rilke. The film explores the power of dreams to inspire and scare the living daylights back into us. Dreams and how they act on our conscious waking lives has always fascinated me, especially those influences that carry on from the dream world into the creation of art, poetry and cinema. In my own dreams, I have been shown how the only art that comes from "conscious mind" is dead art. My aim in making films is to bring something of what dreams have shown me back into the world of people. You can see an example of what I mean at this clip:

need to transfer hi 8 ASAP can you help

Hi i need help transfering Hi 8 to digital
im working on a music video for Aphrodesia
it will air all over west africa in about a month
thank you

Aphrodesia’s West African Bio-diesel Tour
When much of America last heard of Aphrodesia, the explosive 11-piece afrobeat-inspired
band from San Francisco, the band was fueling their bus with recycled vegetable
oil and driving cross-country on their self-proclaimed “Just Vote Tour”. The group
visited swing states to register voters in advance of the 2004 presidential elections,
and to preach the virtues of alternative fuel. Apparently, the group hasn’t learned
to think small since.
This February, Aphrodesia will once again take their high-energy show on the road
in a bus that runs on bio-diesel. But it’s not a road that they (or indeed any other
American afrobeat or West African-inspired band) have before traveled: Aphrodesia
will be touring Ghana and parts of West Africa for one month. The tour kicks off
with the band performing as part of the Africa Unite Festival in Kumasi, Ghana,
on February 4th and Accra, Ghana on February 6th. The Festival celebrates Bob Marley’s
61st birthday, produced in part by Rita Marley and the Marley family. After the
Festival, Aphrodesia’s tour will be booked by Alliance Francais, and will include
tour dates throughout the rest of Ghana, Togo, Benin, and perhaps Burkina Faso.
What’s more, the band will be traveling in a bio-diesel-powered bus donated by the
Ghanaian Ministry of the Environment, which soon plans to integrate bio-diesel into
the country’s transportation system. The Ministry is eager to use Aphrodesia’s
visit to promote this method of alternative fuel.
For much of the tour, Aphrodesia will co-bill with the African Showboyz, a group
of five brothers from Ghana who Aphrodesia met last summer in the United States.
Both groups participated in the High Sierra Music Festival, the Sierra Nevada World
Music Festival, and the Joshua Tree Music Festival. By the end of the summer, the
two groups had formed such a close friendship that they performed a joint set together
at the Earthdance Festival, an ambitious cross-cultural performance that laid the
groundwork for Aphodesia’s West African tour.
“We had been talking about visiting Ghana as a band for a while--since we started
the band, actually” says Ezra Gale, the 34-year old co-founder and bassist. “But
it wasn’t until we met the Showboyz this summer and performed with them at Earthdance
that we started thinking that this could really happen.” Aphrodesia isn’t a complete
stranger to Ghana. Lara Maykovich, the band’s lead singer and co-founder, lived
in Ghana in 1997 and 1998. Indeed, much of the band’s first album, the acclaimed
“Shackrobeat Vol. 1”, contains traditional Ghanaian melodies arranged by Maykovich,
with original music composed by the group.
Aphrodesia’s involvement with bio-diesel and alternative fuel came about when guitarist
David Sartore, 26, joined the group in 2004. Sartore, a co-founder of the Clean
Fuel Caravan Coalition, a Bay Area-based collective of bio-diesel mechanics and
resources, introduced the band to the wonders of traveling on vegetable oil and
bio-diesel fuel. Sartore notes that helping promote alternative fuel in West Africa
fits with the band’s vision of a healthier, more independent and sustainable future.
“This part of the world has been devastated environmentally by the effects of the

I made a zero budget feature length film awhile ago. Defintely trying to do the most with very limited means. Here's a site that gives some details and a link to an archive where it can be downloaded:
http://www.e-monsite.com/nihilocinoch/
Right now it's in French without subtitles but I'm putting some on and I'm going to try to get it distributed. Anyway I'm thinking about doing another perhaps in America or another country. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Seminar: “What is Producing” Tuesday, December 13, 2005 - SFSU Burk Hall 229 or remote access video stream

opic: “What is Producing”

Tuesday, December 13, 2005

6:00 – 7:00 PM

Burk Hall 229 or
remote connections (internet):

We will stream using Quicktime 7. Launch Quicktime, under File, choose
Open URL and type or paste rtsp://at1.sfsu.edu/Ujlaki.sdp

Hello Everyone,

Once Upon a time in a Digital Village is a distance learning project that will be hosting Stephen Ujlaki, Chairman of SFSU's Cinema Department. I am organizing this event as a project for a graduate Distance Education class. All ITEC and Cinema students, along with alumni and others with an interest in Film Producing are welcome to participate.

On Tuesday Dec. 13th, 2005 between 6 pm and 7 pm, Prof. Ujlaki will be giving a one hour intensive "What is Producing" seminar, during the 442 Cinema class in Producing Film and visual media. This is a highly sought after advanced class in the art, and business, of Producing Film and other media projects that are related to film and video production.

If you have ever wondered what types of contracts, talent releases, and various waivers are needed to produce a film or documentary piece that can get distribution or be allowed into film festivals, then this is a rare opportunity to learn and ask questions from an industry profession. An industry professional who is the Chair of SFSU Cinema Dept. and dedicated to pulling away the "veil" of the Film Industry juggernaut's inner workings so students can approach their career with a solid knowledge of industry standards and not a pocket full of mysteries and rumors.

A portion of this project will be conducted in the Collaboratorium (Burk Hall Room 229) with students participating through two-way video and text conferencing. There will be full video and audio support in the Collaboratorium. To use text as a remote communication tool, we will be using Skype (if you want to connect remotely using Skype you will have to download Skype (from www.skype.com) and login use the Skype Chat utility) - we may arrange a second option also, email Robert (me) to get an update on this.

To be included in this project please RSVP to; rlf4productions@gmail.com, as feeds will be limited (to the first 200 online participants), as will the seats at the Collaboratorium – we may arrange special seating in select cases as needed for those alumni and students who are involved with media production or who maybe for their work or program.

***If you are a Tribe member note that (and which Tribe - ei.: Film makers, DV, editing, etc.) in your email and I will do my best to get you all set up. Please contact me before 3pm Tues. as I will be running through the spec. test after that time to see how our streaming video transfer rate is clocking, as well as testing our feed.***

A bit about film producer Stephen Ujlaki, chair of SFSU Cinema Department:

Stephen Ujlaki, a producer of more than 25 feature films, made-for-cable movies and documentaries, was recently named professor and chair of the San Francisco State University Cinema Department, named one of the nation's top film schools last year by Entertainment Weekly.

As vice president of development and production for HBO Pictures from

1983 to 1988, Ujlaki supervised script development, production and post-production for more than 25 films including "Baja Oklahoma"

(Julia Roberts), "Last Innocent Man" (Ed Harris) and "Act of Vengeance" (Charles Bronson).

"Film production involves many of the same administrative, logistical and people skills: ensuring that financial and creative input into the screenplay is heard, keeping everyone happy without going over budget or hurting the picture, resolving conflicts, and maintaining strong leadership and direction," said Chairman Ujlaki.

Ujlaki was most recently president of Panarea Productions, where he produced such feature films as "Loch Ness" (Ted Danson), "Hot Spot"

(Don Johnson, directed by Dennis Hopper) and "Courage Mountain"

(Charlie Sheen) as well as numerous HBO feature films including "Stiletto Dance" (Eric Roberts), "Xchange" (Stephen Baldwin) and "Hostile Intent" (Rob Lowe).

Previously, Ujlaki headed the European Feature and Television Production division for Stone Group France, a production studio owned by actor Michael Douglas. Reporting directly to Douglas, Ujlaki was responsible for bringing productions to the studio, managing film budgets, overseeing co-production partners and managing all personnel and film crews.

"San Francisco State can be known as more than just the 'independent film school,'" said Ujlaki, who founded the film program at Franconia College in New Hampshire and has also taught at the American Film Institute and Brandeis University. "A degree in cinema could also provide a wealth of career opportunities in the film industry. If one does not wish to pursue a completely independent path, there are many other marketable skills that can be developed into such careers as writing, producing, editing, directing and post-production."

I highly recommend sending preview screeners of your completed features to filmthreat.com, a major industry site that is browsed by agents, producers and distributors for 5-star reveiws of films that have not been bought yet. They recently reviewed my feature "The Greater Circulation".

http://www.filmthreat.com/Reviews.asp?Id=8150

The drama pivots around the central conflict of women artists torn between wanting to have children and wanting to excel in the art. Though some women manage to do both, many who attempt the dual task manifest tragic results.

I am trying to decide between a digital SRL and a video camera.

Is there a video camera that will also take still photographs and long exposures with high quality high megapixels?

The size matters too because I don't want the camera to be obstrusive while with friends and such

ISO camerapersons and Lighting for music video, also extras
i volunteered to produce a music video for the Paranoids for my friend's directing debut. we need at least 2 DV cams and lighting for a video to be shot in the band's ultragroovy 70s living room/warehouse. this director is demanding like most and wants the crew to have the same look as the dancing people so check out the band's website. it's all for love and will take only one day to shoot so i guess we should feed you guys and get you drunk. really it's about having extrasuperfuntime and getting some credits. film students welcome.

I have been combining super-8 film & DV in my last two feature-length works and have discovered some cool telecine resources and applications in these highly compatible mediums. You can read more about my work plus view some clips at:

Just received a Megxon C500 camera, and I'm enjoying it, except....
The manual is not very good. I've been able to figure out some of the functions anyway, but perhaps someone with more digital camera experience can help me understand:

1. This camera has wheel with 2 settings that seem identical:
Scene Mode versus Capture Mode. Can anyone explain what the difference is?

2. The manual lists Metering as a menu option, saying it is to adjust exposure values. But when I go to this menu option, it gives three choices: Matrix, Center or Spot. However, the manual does not give any explanation of what these three represent.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The only negative I've found about this little camera so far is that it uses up batteries like crazy, and does not have an option for an external power supply.

actors/collaborators on quick and dirty movies

Well, not dirty movies per se--- I am interested in meeting people who want to be involved in a series of extremely quick, guerilla-style shorts, almost exercises. I would like people to be in front of the camera but they could be creative collaborators too (i.e. working on the concepts) . I have the camera and editing stuff. If you are familiar with Stan Douglas' mono-dramas, that is along the same lines, although maybe a little more involved than that. I can point you to other examples if you like. These movies might play at festivals but they might just be little curiosities that are seen by loved ones.

I am working on more involved shorts for the future but I am sick of all this screenwriting, planning etc. bogging me down while everyone around me gets in touch with their spontaneity. This could definitely lead to more substantial collaborations in the future as I plan more ambitious works. I have made several filmsand I went to UCSC film school... I am a pretty good writer and filmmaker. We could definitely have some fun and make some cool little films, work on our chops and so on. If you are interested, you can email me at xantadu@yahoo.com
Thanks,
Clinton

I have a 16mm project I’m working on and I need some advice. I have a scene where a room catches on fire and burns, I have a scale model for the exterior shot I think I have that all planned out. The problem I have is the interior shots and how to film, light and pull of believable effects. Does anyone have experience or ideas about how to pull this off well? Any help is needed.

From another Tribe...if you haven't seen this film, you really must!
It tells a story of another time. After seeing this, I remember that this really happened in my own generation. Hope that you will take the time to watch this on line! I think it important for the next generation to see that these things happened. Especially if you are in the S.F. area...this is where a lot of this started. Hope you get something from it. IT happened...I was there...
Just my 2 cents worth...

Can anyone tell me the names of a few acceptable video cards in the low price range?

I have a Pentium 4 PC with Windows 98, and my video card is starting to go. I need to replace it, but don't do a lot of heavy video work so an inexpensive one should do for me.

can anyone recommend video editing software for a PC?

Hi,

I'm wondering if there is a program for the PC that is comparable to Apple's Final Cut Pro? Anyone using the Adobe stuff? I'm playing with Pinnacle's Studio Plus program but looking for something with a little more horsepower.

Or is the Apple stuff so much better that it just makes sense to get a mini-mac and change platforms completely? Is it that much better? I'd rather stay on my PC platform and put my cash towards software. I'd like to stay in the $500 or less price range.

Thanks!
Rick

We are pleased to announce the launch of the long-awaited short film EARTH INFERNO by Producto Desecho. This is the first film made based upon a work by Spare and we are delighted to make it available in DVD format. With a total running time of 11 minutes, in full colour, the film evokes the strange theatre and sexuality of Spare's first short book. Due to the nudity
and sexual references this film has been given a 15 certificate by the British Board of Film Censors.

There are two issue available:

A special issue of 51 examples in a special black cloth clam-shell
case, containing a signed polaroid photograph by the film-makers, a limited edition set of photographs of images taken "behind the scenes" during filming, and a certificate of limitation.

£42.00 (p+p for US orders £5.00)

A standard issue of 397 examples with a certificate of limitation.

Hi,

I'm very new to digital movies...just purchased my first digital movie camera...and I'm looking for advice on a decent inexpensive editing program. Something basic, since as I said I'm new at this, and ideally, something with a free trial download so I can play with it first to see if I can work with it.

The camera records everything as an .asf file but I assume a good software package would allow me to convert it to another format as well.

All suggestions greatfully appreciated.
